Thomas Nowell Biography
Thomas Nowell (1730? – 23 September 1801) was a Welsh-born clergyman, historian, and religious controversialist. He attended Oriel College, Oxford, where he won the Duke of Beaufort's exhibition in 1747. Nowell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1750, followed by a Master of Arts degree in 1753. He became a fellow of Oriel in 1753 and served various roles within the college, including as junior treasurer, senior treasurer, and Dean. In 1760, Nowell anonymously wrote a rebuttal titled 'A Dissertation upon that Species of Writing called Humour, when Applied to Sacred Subjects,' arguing for the seriousness and decency in treating biblical topics.
